Topics include index properties, classification, stress analysis, compressibility, compaction, dewatering, excavation, stabilization, settlement, and foundations. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic soil tests and analyze engineering properties of soil. Course Goals: 1. To familiarize the student with sources and types of soils. 2. To familiarize the student with site investigations. 3. To familiarize the student with soil sampling and testing. 4. To familiarize the student with analysis of subsurface stresses. 5. To familiarize the student with settlement and bearing capacity. 6. To familiarize the student with library research for oral and written reports. Course Objectives: To gain an appropriate mastery of the knowledge, technique, skills and modern tools of their disciplines. To gain an ability to apply current knowledge and adapt to emerging applications of mathematics, science, engineering and technology. To gain an ability to conduct, analyze and interpret experiments and apply experimental results to improve processes. To gain an ability to function effectively on teams. To gain an ability to identify, analyze and solve technical problems. To gain an ability to communicate effectively. To gain a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning. To gain a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
