Course Description:
This course introduces the concepts and issues related to securing information systems and the development of policies to implement information security controls. Topics include the historical view of networking and security, security issues, trends, security resources, and the role of policy, people, and processes in information security. Upon completion, students should be able to identify information security risks, create an information security policy, and identify processes to implement and enforce policy.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, students will be able to (through completion of classwork and assignments):

  • Indentify what is meant by security threats
  • Differentiate between the following defenses against attacks: Layering, Limiting, Diversity, Obscurity and Simplicity
  • Differentiate between malware and social engineering. List examples of each type of attack.
  • Relate types of attacks and attackers.
  • Identify the concept of encryption
  • Recognize the uses of Firewalls, Proxies, and Intrusion Detection Systems, NAT, NAC, DMZs and VLANs
  • Summarize security protocols and standards such as WEP, WPA, WPA2
  • Comprehend authentication services for Kerberos, LDAP, RADIUS, TACACS
  • Comprehend the four access control models: DAC, MAC, RBAC (role), RBAC (rule
  • Summarize cryptology and identify cryptographic algorithms for asymmetric, symmetric and hashing algorithms
  • Identify key exchange methods as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method
  • Identify security policy and order the steps to create, maintain, implement and enforce the security policy.

Grading Is As Follows:
Exams 50 Exams must be taken on the assigned date; otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned. Any exception to this policy must be the result of a documented emergency or prior arrangement with the instructor. There will be no exceptions to this rule!! NO EXCEPTIONS!! All makeup exams must be taken prior to the scheduled exam date. This must be pre-arranged with the instructor. Last minute arrangements are not acceptable. Students must complete the online final exam and online midterm exam to pass the course. Failure to complete either one will result in a grade of ‘F’ for the course.
Labs/Projects 45 Assignments and labs are due on the assigned date. There will be no extensions, no exceptions. Only documented emergencies will be considered for extensions. In the remote chance that an extension is given, 25 points will be deducted for each day the project or assignment is late.
Attendance 5 Students will follow the official Wake Tech Attendance Policy



 
Classroom Policies:

  • Students are responsible for all of the information presented in the Wake Technical Community College Student Handbook.
  • Please note that computers are to be used at all times for official course purposes. Use of computers for general web surfing, e-mailing, chat room discussions, social networking, and any other non-course related task is forbidden. Violation of this rule will result in a grade deduction and possible loss of computer privileges.
  • The college forbids the use of all audible electronic equipment during instructional time. Forbidden devices include but are not limited to: cell phones, smart phones, MP3 players, and PDAs.
  • If you miss a lecture or arrive late, you are responsible for the material presented, handouts distributed, and any announcements made that day. The instructor will not provide notes for missed classes.
Note: Wake Tech provides every student with an official e-mail account which is to be used for all e-mail correspondence with instructors and college officials. Some information such as instructor to student correspondence, WebAdvisor registration information, and financial aid information will ONLY be e-mailed from Wake Tech to your official e-mail account. Students in all curriculum classes must activate and use their my.waketech.edu account. Once you have activated your e-mail account, you may choose to re-direct your e-mail to another account of your choosing. Please be advised that Wake Tech will only send e-mail to your Wake Tech e-mail account. Furthermore, college officials and instructors may decline to accept e-mail from accounts other than the college-issued my.waketech.edu account.
